An hour later, Aden stood naked as moonlight streamed into the small rental apartment Liam—the recruiter—called home. Liam was asleep, and Aden placed Daniel’s device next to Liam’s datapad.

As Clan, coupling was just an enjoyable activity. While almost everyone had a gender preference one way or the other, it was the rare graduate that hadn’t spent a night or two experimenting with best friends. Aden hadn’t been with another male since graduating from the shiver, but he’d quickly figured out Liam was angling for a night with him. As they’d left together an hour later, he spotted Mika and Echo dancing together on the floor.

“You good?” Mika had asked over the frequency.

“It’s the job,” he’d mouthed back.

As Aden quietly found his clothes, the device blinked green three times before going dark,. Dressing quickly, he slid the device into a pocket and slipped out the apartment’s front door, noiselessly closing it behind him.

He took the stairs down and exited the building, the complex’s awning protecting him from the rain. Down the street, a set of headlights activated, and he waited until the car pulled up alongside. Wayne was up front with Garnet, and Aden slid into the backseat.

“Good work, Four,” said Wayne, looking at him in the rearview mirror.

“Have you had a chance to look at your perscom yet?” asked Garnet, turning around to face him. He shook his head, and her deep blue eyes bored into him. “Two pulled the last message Liam received from the Cutthroats, and sent it to all of us. You need to read it, we need your analysis.”

Aden frowned, pulled out his perscom, and read the message. His eyes opened wide in surprise, he looked at Garnet, at Wayne watching him in the mirror, and then his perscom again.

“What the hell?” Aden asked. “This doesn’t make any sense at all.”
